L.A. BIG DADDY'S | MAKING MUSIC PROPERLY (est. 2017)
Musical History & Bio : December 2023 - Written by Keith Langerman
MAKING MUSIC: How did Matt and David, childhood friends, find themselves on the path to becoming the musical heroes they admired? Their journey began in the 1970s, as they worked as multi-instrumentalists for prominent figures like Brenda Arnou, an actress known for her role in James Bond films, and Richard Street of The Temptations. They also had the privilege of making music alongside actor Chevy Chase for NBC's popular variety series The Midnight Special. They became the go-to musicians for acclaimed American smooth jazz saxophonist Ronnie Laws, as well as for the R&B group Loose Ends. Additionally, they would go on to write and record with the great Los Angeles based soul R&B vocal group The Whispers, while providing the infectious groove for the blues powerhouse known as "Sista Monica" Parker.
Other notable sessions include blues artist Gregg Wright, the legendary Bumps Blackwell as well as Japanese smooth jazz artist Yutaka Yokiqura.
Matt Bragg and David E. Jackson form the core of "L.A. Big Daddy's," a music group based in Los Angeles. Their enduring friendship and shared history offer valuable insights into the musical journey that culminated in their first full-length studio album, "Rock Your Blues Away." This twelve-track record is a testament to their exceptional songwriting skills, as they explore cultural themes that resonate deeply within our communities. It is a musical vision brought to life—a gentle reminder of the collective appreciation for all things great and the power of good music.
Featuring Guest Performers: Kee Eso Pitchford, Ernie Johnson, and Dwayne
"Holyghost Guitar" Watkins. Also, Norman Williams and Adrian Meyers lend their talents to the project.
Three years ago, a chance phone call brought the two together with critically acclaimed Canadian blues artist Jordan Patterson. An industry veteran with decades of experience as a musician and now music producer, who possesses considerable business capabilities from his previous career with House of Blues Concerts Canada. Patterson brought to the table a fresh, new perspective in terms of the music’s production values and helped to develop the strategic business model for the delivery of this project moving forward.
After careful consideration and reassessment of the current musical economic landscape, it was unanimously agreed upon to switch their immediate focus towards the release of individual tracks as singles. A strategy that had an immediate payoff with the release in 2022 of "Proud Man's Blues" (Radio Mix)." An upbeat, powerful blues track, a Jordan Patterson and Michael DeMott remix, which reached the coveted #1 spot on the Roots Music Report charts. This achievement further solidified the band's status as a force to be reckoned with in the Blues and Roots Rock music scene, also being added to Spotify's Upbeat Blues playlist, where it has remained for over 50 weeks.
In December 2023, it was announced that, continuing with the same economic model, a new single would be forthcoming in February 2024 - a modern-day take on the B.B. King classic "Why I Sing The Blues." Like its predecessor "Proud Man's Blues," this soulful track showcases the band's exceptional talent and serves as a tribute to B.B King and Aretha Franklin. The lyrical message remains relevant today, just as much as when first recorded by those two legends.
"Why I Sing The Blues" features a lineup of extraordinary musicians who bring their unique flair to the composition. Matt Bragg sets the rhythm with his impeccable bass guitar skills, while David E. Jackson provides a solid foundation on drums. Adrian Myers delivers a heartfelt performance as the lead vocalist, captivating listeners with his soulful voice. Richard Moorings mesmerises with his skills on the electric piano, adding depth and texture to the song. Tony Coleman showcases his mastery of the B3 organ and Wurlitzer, infusing the track with a rich, authentic sound. Alejandro Monfort, a gifted Mexican guitarist, shines on both rhythm and lead guitars, lending his distinctive style to the music. The Trinity Gospel Singers grace the song with their beautiful background vocals, enriching the overall listening experience.
